An important new offering by Fimat Preferred concerns recent rule changes for risk-based margining by the SEC, which has allowed the firm to offer a program for Portfolio Margining of broad-based index options and corresponding ETFs. Eligible accounts can be subject to a more efficient margin treatment based on the net risks of the eligible instruments, instead of the standard Reg T margin requirements. The program works as a modified risk-based haircut, without the customer being a registered broker/dealer under the SEC. Benefits may include the freeing up of significant capital in some qualified trading accounts. In addition to the broad-based indices and ETFs, these same SEC rules will soon make available equities and equity options as part of portfolio margining. Fimat Preferreds program allows accounts with a minimum of $5 million in equity much greater flexibility in margining. For these portfolio accounts, customers trading broad-based indices and ETFs have a margin requirement of the maximum of the theoretical loss based on a +6.0 percent to -8.0 percent move of the index or ETF.
